Mindfulness

The most commonly quoted definition of Mindfulness comes from Jon Kabat-Zinn:

“Paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”

The practice of Mindfulness allows us to pay close attention to the present moment, noting our thoughts, feelings and body sensations with an attitude of curiosity and acceptance. This observing, allows us to consciously respond with clarity and focus, rather than react out of a habitual pattern. It opens up the possibility of working more wisely with difficulties in life and widens the choices available to us.

Furthermore, the capacity to be Mindful lies in all human beings, and is available to be experienced in each moment and with every breath.

Meditation does not have to be a static activity

Meditation does not have to be a static activity. We don’t necessarily have to remain silent and still to meditate. In simple terms, meditation is the art of existing entirely and appreciating fully the present moment. Filling your mind with no more than one endeavor, whatever is in front of you with alert participation.

Others have likened crafting to entering a state of "flow." It is a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter.”

Neuroscientists are beginning to understand how mindfulness, meditation and experiencing "flow" impact the brain. Research shows these practices improve depression, anxiety, coping style in the face of adversity, improve quality of life, and significantly reduce stress. All vital for maintaining brain health and well-being.

Albert Einstein was reputed to have knitted between projects to "calm his mind and clear his thinking."
